Equiknoxx Music presents “an honest meal” the debut full-length
vocal album from unkle G produced by Gavsborg.

The set largely explores the rarely considered perspective of the producer in the vocalist-led Jamaican music industry wherein Gavsborg cut his teeth. It’s a self-aware yet poignant set that’s punctuated with pockets of humour flitting between lush, beautiful backdrops to stripped, weighty junglist-influenced productions (think Dave Kelly’s Backyard riddim/Tom & Jerry releases) all carried together by unkle G’s varied tales in search of an honest meal.

The tracks which feature a swath of regular collaborators detail all facets of (studio) life. From experiences with hypervigilant assistant engineers, being stopped by police on the way to the studio, the thievery of a drum machine, the generosity of mentors such as Gussie Clarke, having riddims rejected by Popcaan, studio rules, studio time being disrespected, the admin of trying to clear samples and just the absurdity of some things that go down behind the scenes....

“I&I have been writing vocals with and for Jamaican artists for over a decade now. It has never been just about emailing beats to people, hoping that they would record. A big part of my experience as a Jamaican artist is everybody sitting in a room and sharing lyrics back and forth until the final song is created. Doing this over the years has brought me to unkle G, and the space to share some of these experiences & vibe.”

It’s truly a reflection of the multifaceted role that a producer plays yet despite this you can feel unkle G (check the eponymous track) still loves what they do and wouldn’t switch it for tech start-up anytime soon!
